There’s nothing quite like the first glimpse of your little one. For many parents-to-be, seeing their baby for the first time on an ultrasound screen is an unforgettable moment. But how early can you actually see your baby? And what can you expect to see at different stages of pregnancy?
Here’s a guide to early pregnancy ultrasounds.
The Earliest Peek: 4-6 Weeks
If you’re eager to see your baby as soon as possible, you may be able to get an ultrasound as early as four to six weeks into pregnancy. However, at this stage, you won’t see much more than a tiny gestational sac. This early scan is usually performed to confirm the pregnancy and ensure that the embryo has implanted properly in the uterus.
By five to six weeks, a small yolk sac may become visible, and if you’re lucky, you might even see the first flicker of a heartbeat! It’s still early days, but this is the first exciting step in your baby’s development.
A Little More Detail: 7-8 Weeks
Around the seven to eight-week mark, the magic really starts to unfold. At this point, a transvaginal ultrasound (where a small probe is inserted for a clearer view) can show more defined features, such as the embryo’s shape and a stronger heartbeat.
The baby (still called an embryo at this stage) is only about the size of a blueberry, but you may be able to spot tiny arm and leg buds beginning to form. This is also when the heartbeat becomes more consistent and can be measured for the first time.

A Clearer Picture: 9-12 Weeks
By the time you reach nine to twelve weeks, your baby is looking more like a miniature human. A standard abdominal ultrasound can usually pick up a clearer image of the growing fetus. You might even see some wiggles and movement, even though you won’t be able to feel them just yet!
At this stage, you can typically make out the head, torso, and tiny limbs. Some parents are even lucky enough to see their baby wave or bounce around.
Why Parents Love Early Ultrasounds
Early ultrasounds are more than just a thrilling sneak peek; they offer important medical benefits as well. These scans help:
- Confirm pregnancy viability:Checking for a heartbeat and proper implantation.
- Determine gestational age:Knowing how far along you are helps with accurate due date estimation.
- Detect multiples:Are you expecting twins or more? An early scan can reveal this exciting surprise!
- Ensure healthy development:Monitoring the baby’s growth and detecting potential concerns early on.
Of course, for many parents, the biggest benefit is simply seeing their baby and bonding with this new little life growing inside them.
